| Quote CROWN GREEN PIGEON="CROWN GREEN PIGEON"With Richard Owen first choice full back and Chase and Sherwin first choice half backs, just wondered peoples opinions on how Ryan McGoldric will fit in the team??
I personally would have him on the bench has cover for the half backs and full back/centre.'"
I agree with you.
Goldy should have been on bench for most of the second half of last season - I'm far from a critic of his and believe prior to this dip in form he'd been arguably our best player since he arrived; often at his best at full-back.
However, if we could tie-up Owen we have an immense long-term full-back and we should keep him there from now on.
Goldy needs to come off the bench at centre/half-back/hooker/loose-forward and hopefully be a great impact player until he proves himself again.

| Owen for you guys is outstanding at FB and RM not a patch on him, if you have room RM would probably be best at but Shenton is a must so depends on who gets the nod between Evans and RM?

Evans would be the slowest winger in the league, plus his defence would be wasted, i would rather have rm on the wing than evans.

| Wing and centre are specialist positions and we need to pick them as such.
I think sticking Evans, Shenny or McG on the wing is a serious error - Look at NRL teams if you want to see what specialists in specialist positions can do.
If Richie Owen is our best fullback, then he must play there.
If Michael Shenton or Ryan McGoldrick and James Evans are the best centre's at the club -then they start there.
If Brent Sherwin and Rangi Chase are the best half backs at the club then they play there.
End of discussion, if Ryan McGoldrick is good enough to be picked in any of those positions, then he gets the nod,if not then he doesn't start - it seems pretty simple to me that the best players start in their best positions, you don't accomodate someone for the sake of it unless it is a Lockyear, Fittler, Tallis, Johns and I think if you asked Goldy yourself, he would only want to be in the team on merit in a position he merits.
Once you have injuries, I still think the same rules apply.... If Owen gets injured or Shifty or Rangi - then you have to decide is Brierly or Thompson, to name but two are a better option to fill in than a utility player.
The one thing from this I would really like Terry to think about though is that if Rangi is injured and you play Brierly there, we might not win but he will be better for the experience next time.
But Terry, honestly and I am a big fan of yours and a supporter - If Rangi is injured and you ask Widders to fill in at stand off, we are still unlikely to win and nobody benefits for the experience..... Personal opinion of course!
For what my opinion is worth, Full Back is Goldy's best position lately becuase I have not seen him play at centre regularly - but he is not as good as Richard Owen overall in that position so he has to wait for his run on start and would be valuable off the bench, but playing on the bench is also an acquire skill and doesn't work for everyone!

| I want to see Owen at full back, but think Mcgoldrick will get the nod by T.M
The big question is how will Owen react to being on the wing?, would he leave at the end of next season if another club came in and said they want him 1st choice full back?.
It a tough call for the coach, who does he go with?...one of his mates, or one with real potential?

| This is great Chris - instead of ringing you or texting you then we can have a conversation on here- how quaint!
Anyway, I actually believe Terry will pick the best players in their best position as he sees it.... trouble is we all don't see it the same way!
My big worry is still that we flog Widders or Goldy at half back if Rangi or Shifty get injured and there is no future in that..... If Owen or either winger or half get injured we have got to give Thompson and Brierly a shot otherwise they will never be ready.

| Very good mark, but this forum isnt =#0000FF<removed> Farcebook
good point about the halves if rangi & shifty get crocked, be a miracle if sherwin goes through the season without injury
We havent got a stop gap half back between the two above and brierley if T.M doesnt think he's ready.
Id have a look in the lower leagues for one as money appears tight.

I watched Brierly on Boxing Day and he will not be ready this year, He only played 15 mins against there 20's and looked lacking of ideas and his physical strength was very lacking, although his first two kicks caused problems

I concur, looks way too sleight to be handling SL atm, if we have a crisis at half back, get somebody in who can do the job and has experience of SL. Throwing Brierly in against the likes of Leeds or Saints will imo hinder his progress rather than enhance it. Use him sparingly against the 'lesser' teams and, hopefully, easy cup games, there is no big rush, he is a young lad with plenty of time to 'beef' up and get game time under his belt.
