| How the feck Giggs got the award I don't know? He's a team player in a team that arguably did well last year. If Giggs was deserving of the SPOTY then why wasn't Messi included in the overseas SPOTY playing for a team that won more?
There are (INO) far more deserving sports peope out there who achieved more statistically in their sport than Giggs did in 2009.
All it shows is there are lots of Manure fans who collectively managed to elevate Giggs to No1 on the vote, and Giggs is BBC friendly, so the mass voting was accepted (unlike Bob Nudd)
I did admire Linekers little dig at Woods though with reference to 'wayward driving' and 'trouble with birdies'. Very subtle....not!!!

| Giggs himself was shocked & genuinely delighted to win the award. Maybe he thought it would go to Button?
The fact that it was decided by a public vote IMV explains why he won.
I think he's a worthy winner for all the reasons stated above but I also would have preferred to see Cavendish win for his unique achievements not enough to have bothered voting for him though.
The biggest injustice was the England men's cricketers winning the team award & that was not down to a public vote. My winners would have been the England women cricket team.
I was surprised to see the Ireland RU team amongst the contenders although I suppose it is an all Ireland team so it includes players from N.I.
Another reason why the England cricket team could win again since they now include an Irish player in the side!!
If in the future the Sky GB cycling team win the Tour de France I wonder if the BBC will give them the team award? That would be ironic.

| I don't see why people get upset about this kind of thing.
At the highest level rugby league is pretty small.
Internationals are tiny compared to union and football and all but a few super league teams play in small area in the north of england.
Know your place.

Spot on and the OP should take a look at the number of people who attend race meeting all over the country compared to the tiny crowds we get in RL before having a hissy fit about it, some sports didn't even get a look it, RL got it's fair % IMO.

| I like most sports (RU being a notable exception) but the sports personality program is and always has been complete and utter pants. It will never truly reflect what the English public think, only what suits the BBC in terms of the sport they cover on their channels. Almost as bad as Question of Sport with that pain in the Phil "Tuffers" Tuffnell.

Not sure I agree. SL attendances for most years have been on a par with RU club games and SL regularly gets better TV viewing figures than their equivalent. Exceptions are Internationals and Cup games. But considering RU is played nationally in Britain I think we compare well and if you take into consideration fitness and skill levels then RL wins hands down againt RU

A valid point. But when you watch the coverage there is only a very small clip of domestic rugby union, perhaps on a par with ours. It is the international game that gets the larger coverage and rightly so! There audience figures are much greater than anything our game can do.

I think he's a deserving winner. In an age where football is ran by overpaid, cheating prima donnas it's nice to see a real positive role model win something like this.

I don't think anyone is saying he's not a great role model or a great player, just that he shouldn't have got an annual award in a year when he didn't do anything particularly special. If he was deserving this year then surely he should have walked it the previous year when Man Utd also won the Champions League.

Goes to show how poor a year GB had for sport.
