| Leeds fans actually seem more bothered about this than Sheriffe himself.

| Quote DILLIGAF="DILLIGAF"Tell you what, those Leeds fans on this thread that "clearly saw it" are god damn impressive.
The replay's just been on Boots n All and it looked like he hit the flag almost exactly the same time as he grounded the ball.
You lot must see things in super slow motion to have clearly seen that it wasn't a try.'"
It was a try

Sorry, but from what I saw on Boots 'n' All, NOBODY could have been able to tell which hit first, the flag or the grounding. Not at full speed.
Anyone saying "it was definitely a try" or "it definitely wasn't a try" is looking through rose tinted glasses imo.

I agree. If we'd been on Sky then it might have gone the other way. But as it was, the linesman was damned if you do and damned if you dont

Precisely. Regardless of the history of Mr. Child, it would have taken someone with superhero powers to tell if that was a try at full speed. Either decision he gave could have been justified and I don't think there is any need to question it, no matter which way it went.

| This thread has probably died a death, point made that the speed and intensity of the modern game demands for better quality officials.
There were several difficult calls in that game, including I'd say Hall's first try, which looked suspiciously like a knock on in real time.

How do you work that out?
If anything, I'd say that this particular try says that the modern game demands super human powers from it's officials to get everything right.

So...video refs at every game? Or at none?

Even a video ref would have had trouble deciding the Sheriffe one from what I've seen.
I think it was more of a "let's just accept there are some decisions that are just too damned hard and lay off the officials a little".

I agree with that though given the history of VR decisions I don`t have great faith in them either to be honest.
I agree that some decisons are just too hard but there are procedures in place for this and I thought that these days, the idea was that benefit of the doubt (and given the angle and speed of the Sheriffe decision I don`t see how Mr Child could have been SO certain a try wasn`t scored when, on the replay I saw he was well behind play) was given to the attacking team.
I don`t really think that we`ll be laying off the officials anytime soon though, particularly when they don`t follow the official guidelines laid down by the RFL. In any case when results are so close decisions made by the officials are always going to be big talking points (as they have been throughout history) and big derbies are always going to bring up a few more.

| The linesman had to make an instant decision. The view from the camera is not far off being from the same angle, yet even with slomo and freeze frame there is no way you can see a try being scored. The TJ called it as he saw it, and I can't see why anyone would have a problem with him doing that.
