How many sorts of rugby are there?



Two: rugby union, with 15 players a team, is played all over the country and has its roots in public schools. Rugby league is a 13-a-side game, historically based in the northern conurbations between the Mersey and the Humber.







How did they evolve?



Rugby union arrived first, in the mid-19th century, and was an amateur game. But when clubs in the industrial north wanted to pay players to compensate them for missing work, a row broke out, leading the northern teams to break away and form their own league. The split has continued to this day, even though both sports are now fully professional.[/i

So much unfulfilled potential. Rugby league is such a fantastic sport, it's a shame we've got no money to make these roots bear fruit.

Well done to the RFL for this and big raps to the Skolars and Quins (in their various formats) plus other smaller sides in London for helping to spread the word.

from small acorns, and all that. the more schoolkids in London we get playing the game now, the more likely the sport is to permeate the Southern universities in 5 years time, then in 5 years - those kids that are learning the game now will be getting jobs in London - and progressing to positions of influence in business, in the media, and in politics.



Its never going to be a quick solution, but given time, this sport can be massive.

She's a 14 year old Essex girl - if she wasn't playing League after school she'd be getting p*ssed on Bacardi Breezers before happy slapping some other kid then putting out in the back of a Corsa FFS.
