| Good Lord, what a profound thread.
I find it hard to believe that global warming is man made, as how important do you think we are on this vast planet? Only one third of the earth is land, and we don't occupy vast swathes of that.
Listening to the "man from the Met Office" yesterday morning explaining why they forecast a "mild winter" I was struck by his comment that seasonal forecasting is a very inexact science and in its early days. If they are having trouble forecasting seasons, how can we trust them to forecast 50 years hence? Is it any coincidence that the chairman of the Met Office is a former CEO of the World Wildlife Fund which is a major sponsor of the global warming theory?
I am not saying that the earth is not warming, as it has done over billions of years, along with global cooling, but I find it nigh impossible to believe that Man has such a high opinion of itself that it thinks (a) it is causing global warming and (b) it can do anything to affect it either way.
GB is on the same line of latitude as Canada and only enjoys mildish winters because of the Gulf Stream. If the Gulf Stream is disrupted for wahtever reason, we can expect more winters like this one.
Scientists have been proved wrong over the ages, and I suggest that, if you haven't done so already, read Bill Bryson's book " A short history of Nearly Everything".
See what you think then.

| Of course humans make a significant impact on the planet, for all those who say we are an insignificant force compared to nature, humans can destroy nature far quicker than it can repair itself. The rainforests are disappearing, thats not part of a natural cycle, its humans developing the technology to cut down trees, humans wanting to use the trees as a resource, and getting to work chopping them down.
The world has been around for billions of years, but nature had a delicate ecosystem where everything worked, and humans coming destroying things has major consequences for the world. We can quickly destroy the habitats of other species which is why many have become extinct, we are threatening others by either destroying their living environment or because we get so good at hunting them we can hunt them into extinction.
Humans cannot destroy the world, as in the earth's core, and there will always be bacteria and cockroaches etc, but we can definitely make the world a place which is impossible to live in for not only humans but most other species of animal and plant.
IMO there's a more immediate threat to the environment than CO2 emissions, which is the proliferation of nuclear weaponry. Now that the Cold War is over, a global superpower annihilation war is unlikely, but there are some volatile states with nuclear weapons now, and a regional war which includes nuclear exchange is quite likely. You only need to see a few nuclear weapons to be used in a regional war, to put a lot of dust and garbage into the atmosphere which would have very quick effects on the climate of the wider region (thats aside from radiation concerns) and ruin agriculture.
