| Quote mr. chairman="mr. chairman"do you remember those big gold chains , well i had no use for them along with a few of the wives bits that i nicked out of her jewellry box and took them to a couple of the shops in leigh, the 1st one offered me £280 and the second one £400 not bad for something that was never used , any one else tried it'"
Depending where you take stuff depends on how much you'll get. Most places will only give you the scrap value of 9ct gold (just like those TV adverts) but if you go to a decent jewlers they'll sort it by quality and give you a better price. 9ct scrap = £7.635 per gram where as 22ct scrap is worth £18.649 gram

| The current price of gold is pretty high.
As long as the recession is biting, investors tend to run to the hills for the safety of gold. When the recovery comes, you will see a fall back in the price of gold.
Shares to watch....

It certainly is and Gordon Brown sold 60% countrys gold when the prices were at there lowest for 20 years. If he'd have waited we'd have been £5bn better off

| I can,t understand the obsession with gold although it is a lot rarer than diamonds which are plentiful. The reason diamond prices are extortionate is down to a company called De Beers but diamonds are not scarce at all so their price is artificially high but people will catch on eventually.
I often wonder what is the point of hoarding gold. Could the world do without it do you think ? I really don,t know.
When I was younger I remember a TV series called Survival in which 95 % of the worlds population perished in a terrible epidemic. One of the survivors tried to hoard as much gold as he could. Seemed a daft thing to do but I suppose that's the way of things.
I wish the weather would improve so I could go watching rugby again.
One final thought if gold is so valuable to society as a whole why is the majority stored in Fort Knox ? Hope it doesn,t get pinched in case they blame David Dozy Knownothing Lightweight Cameron.

Oh well but it's not doing much good is it just lying there doing nothing.
Makes me think if the world came off the gold standard in the thirties in an attempt to boost world trade if it has worked.
Thanks Fred well I am older than you.
Still can,t see the reason it is so valuable to be honest I think I,d rather have a week in Benidorm than spend the same amount on a bit of jewellery.

The reason is because gold has value.
It doesn't rust away, you can't burn it (unlike diamonds), you can get your mits on it and is independent of nations' currency fluctuations.
Its traditionally "safe" investment because people trust it to hold value and it can be traded on all currencies unlike cash which will evaporate because of inflation or governments issuing bonds (like Gordon Brown has done - note parity with the euro).
For some reason, many human beings value gold (but not you it seems, Frank). But more importantly...governments value it.
Its a tangible item...unlike credit default swaps, securitised assets and the other dodgy instruments that practically bankrupted the Western world.

| Quite right Paul. Just got home from a scruffy part of Salford. Seems gold is usefull in treating athritis and electrical stuff (had it been down to me I would use platimun).
Better to use paper maybe . Gold really doesn,t do a lot for people explain why American dollars do ......................just pieces of paper aren,t they ?
