It's been around for a while. Whilst the example given is quite an extreme case, it's not uncommon for two tacklers to secure the top, whilst the 3rd man bowls the legs over.

Wasn't it against Keiran Cunningham? Tomkins debut season I think. Cunningham went off injured??

I seem to recall Jeff Lima getting banned for one of these early in the season

I would never get tired of slapping Richie Mathers in the face with a muddy shoe but on this issue, I'm in total agreement with him - it's a gutless, dirty technique and is designed to deliberately hurt the opposition player.
